Description
The original of this rug, a 17th Century masterpiece, once graced an Imperial Collection (Rijks Museum, Amsterdam). The motif, a Persian vase carpet, is extremely rich and detailed with abundant floral life. Like all carpets of this class, it is characterized by vivid colorization. Its absolutely spectacular polychrome pattern features 12 colors with ground pigments predominating green, orange and brown; its design utilizes those colors plus wine-red, rose, blues, greens, yellow and white. The border is enhanced by sinuous arabesques. The modern Nourison interpretation captures its essential beauty with an exuberance of design in the classic vase pattern. A glittering green-gold predominates the color story, with equally rich effect in details of bronze, lapis and magenta. A narrow border frames this fine piece with artful delicacy.
